Program Description

LGBTQ+ patients have been denied equal access to health care, and 1 in 6 LGBTQ+ individuals have reported being refused care, having their healthcare provider refuse to touch them, excessive use of precautions when being treated, being blamed for their health status, or having a provider verbally abuse them. Additionally, due to previous negative experiences with access, societal stigma, and discrimination, these individuals exhibit a high incidence avoiding seeking health care when sick or injured, potentially leading to secondary health conditions. Discrimination against LGBTQ+ persons has been associated with high rates of psychiatric disorders, substance abuse, and suicide. This webinar will discuss the presence of health care disparities that exist, LGBTQ+ myths and misconceptions within the health care community, and informed care recommendations to eliminate LGBTQ+ health disparities and enhance efforts to improve LGBTQ+ health.

Later in the series, we will examine understand common challenges such as heterosexism, transphobia, cissexism, and homophobia, discuss health care disparities experienced by LGBTQ+ athletes, creating an inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ athletes, and many other topics.

This program is held in partnership with NATA and NSCA. This is a free event that will provide continuing education credit to both physical therapists (through AASPT) and athletic trainers (through USF Athletic Training BOC provider).
