Program Description

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a common issue among female athletes, affecting 21-44%. This is a vast increase from prevalence rates of UI in the general female population (10-13%), with only 3% of 18-28-year-old females affected. The etiology of UI in the athlete appears different from traditional risk factors such as pregnancy, childbirth, and increased BMI, thus other factors must be examined. Additionally, evidence shows that urinary leakage may serve as a barrier to female sport participation, with many women stopping exercise or limiting participation due to urinary leakage. This webinar will present a background on the anatomy and physiology of female continence, discuss classifications and subtypes of UI, report UI prevalence rates among different sports, discuss risk factors for development of UI, and discuss novel research on a study performed on sport characteristics on female athletes with UI.
