Topic: Creating an Inclusive Environment

Program Description

This presentation will provide these educational resources to better prepare athletic trainers and physical therapists to create an environment of inclusivity and equal opportunity for all clinicians and patients, regardless of sexuality, gender identity or gender expression. This presentation will provide ATs and PTs with the tools to practice effective cross-cultural communication and be prepared to work respectfully and effectively in diverse work environments as it relates to LGBTQ+ patients and clinicians.  Additionally, information, resources, and guidance on how to develop inclusive policies and procedures for the participation of transgender individuals in athletics will be provided.

At the end of the program, participants will be able to:

    1. Define commonly used LGBTQ+ terms that create cultural awareness with colleagues and patients.
    2. Develop strategies on how to be an inclusive healthcare provider and an LGBTQ+ ally.
    3. Recognize best practices in providing equitable healthcare to LGBTQ+ patients, including proper referrals related to this population.
    4. Understand the importance of developing policies/procedures for the inclusion of transgender individuals in athletics.
