Academy Statement On Recent Events

June 1, 2020

To all of our AASPT Members,

The American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy recognizes that the events surrounding the death of George Floyd are representative of a phenomenon that is unacceptable. This is a topic that is even more real for the members of Black communities who feel like they must live in fear of those sworn to protect them.

We understand that the recent events that have gained the world’s attention highlight people that feel tired and frustrated with being unheard. As sports physical therapists, we have colleagues and patients that are members of these communities with whom we interact every day. They too feel this pain, and as an Academy, we stand with them and promise to listen and provide support.

We recognize that there is systemic racism that has been allowed to exist and permeate our society and this has to be intentionally disrupted. There should be no more George Floyds, Ahmaud Arberys, or Breonna Taylors. We share our deepest condolences with those families and hope that justice is truly served.

As an Academy, earlier this year we created a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee to systematically change our own internal culture. We are in the process of identifying and correcting the issues that hinder us from being the diverse and inclusive organization we strive to be. APTA President Sharon Dunn noted in a message to membership on 05/31/2020, “As PTs and PTAs, we respect the inherent dignity and rights of all individuals. We are against discrimination. We are for addressing health disparities.” In support of President Dunn’s message, Academy leadership has accepted a personal responsibility to make a difference as it relates to racism and inequality in America.

We believe that diverse representation leads to a better understanding of each other, within our Academy and the various communities in which we live and work. As an organization, we hope to be a part of the solution to end racism and discrimination in our country.
